Chapter 1 Quiz

QUIZ

 THEMES

Location - where it is (longitude and latitude)
Place - has specific qualities that define it - climate, population, mountains, etc.
Region - an area with similar characteristics
Movement - how people, goods, ideas, move from one place to another
Human-Environment Interaction - the impact humans have on the planet (both good and bad) examples include - pollution, deforestation

MAPS
Political - boundaries (between countries, states, etc), features on the earth's surface that humans have created

Physical - types of landforms and bodies of water in a specific area

Thematic - focuses on specific types of information (flow-line,, qualitative, cartograms, economic, etc.

Geography - The study of the distribution and interaction of physical and human features on earth.

Absolute Location - where something is located by longitude and latitude (exact location)

Relative Location - where a place is located based on what's around it or near it.

Small-Scale/Large Scale Maps: Small-scale maps show large areas with less detail.  Large-scale maps show smaller areas with more detail.

Unit Learning goal: Students will be able use the five themes of geography and three types of maps to create a brochure/guide of Skagway that includes an explanation of Skagway to each of the five themes and a physical, political and thematic map of Skagway.  

Scale/Rubric relating to learning goal:
4 – The student can use the five themes of geography and three types of maps to create a brochure of Skagway that includes an explanation of Skagway to each of the five themes and a physical, political and thematic map of Skagway that includes the surrounding areas of Haines and Whitehorse. 
3 – The student can use the five themes of geography and three types of maps to create a brochure of Skagway that includes an explanation of Skagway to each of the five themes and a physical, political and thematic map of Skagway.
